Each post is notched to a depth of 1-1/2 inches on each side to make a secure connection between the beam and post. The rafters over the beams are also notched to take away the lateral motion usually found with un-notched cheap pergolas. This makes for a beautiful outdoor structure that will withstand even the harshest weather.
