Backyard Pergolas With a Canopy
Looking for more shade or protection from the elements with your backyard pergola? We build pergola kits designed to accommodate metal roofing, shade sails, or retractable canopies. We also offer a retractable pergola canopy that can be ordered with any of our freestanding pergola kits or attached pergola kits.
Made in the USA, these colorful canopies offer sun protection, are water repellent, and available in popular colors of Phifertex or Sunbrella material and hardware. Canopies add style to your backyard pergola, and provide much needed shade on your pool deck or patio! Ordering your DIY retractable pergola canopy is a breeze. Just follow these simple steps to customize your canopy:
- Choose Your Pergola Style – Identify whether you’re ordering a freestanding or attached Pergola Depot pergola.
- Select the Canopy Size – Match the size of the canopy to the pergola size in your shopping cart.
- Pick Your Fabric and Color – Choose the fabric and color for your pergola’s retractable canopy. For a multicolor design, opt for an additional color if desired. The total width of the canopy (in inches) and the number of sections will be displayed next to the pergola size. And that’s it! You’re ready to enjoy your personalized pergola canopy.
Looking for more protection from the weather? For full-time shade and rain protection, our Big Kahuna PLUS is a covered pergola kit with roofing that is engineered to withstand 175 mph winds, and can accommodate snow loads in most US locations. Order your pergola kit and metal roofing combination together to complete your covered patio project.
If you’re looking for extra shade on your outdoor patio, or comparing grill pergola kits to cover an outdoor kitchen area, this roofed pergola provides some protection from the elements. It’s an attractive option for a year-round pergola for your backyard!
How to Get a Backyard Pergola
Adding a pergola for backyard enjoyment is easier than you might think! With our large selection of wood pergola kits, you can customize the size and shade coverage to fit your project. The first step you’ll take is to plan your project. Browse our selection of pergola kits to find the perfect fit for your backyard. You can choose from pergolas that attach to your house or other structure, deck pergola kits, freestanding pergolas that you can install on a patio, solar ready pergolas, and many other choices. Since pergolas can be built in many configurations and sizes, rest assured that there is a backyard patio pergola that will fit your space! Measuring for a pergola will help you plan out our new backyard oasis. To ensure you have the enough space for all of your outdoor components, measure where you want the posts to land and calculate how much space you’d like between the posts for furniture, planter boxes, and other patio features. After you’ve identified the best size and style, you’re ready to place your order. We’re always happy to discuss your project before ordering, so call us with any questions!
How Do Backyard Deck Pergolas Get Shipped (And Delivered)?
When your order comes up next on our production calendar, we get to work! After we hand-cut and hand-drill each of your pergola components, we package your pergola for shipment. We custom build a pallet that goes under each of our wood pergola kits, stack the pergola pieces on the pallet, then strap the pieces down and build crating around the outside to protect the lumber. The kit will come on the back of a semi truck and you will need to inspect and hand unload it piece by piece. The driver is not required to help unload it, so just make sure to have 2-3 healthy adults present to unload the lumber for a standard size kit. You’ll also need a tool to cut the strapping from the crate (scissors or knife) and possibly a screw gun with a Phillips bit to uncrate the lumber. The whole process takes about 20-30 minutes. Before you know it, you’ll be on your way to installing your new pergola!
How to Install My Pergola in My Backyard
Our DIY pergola kits include all pre-cut and pre-drilled components and hardware needed to assemble the pergola. They also include step-by-step instructions that will guide you through the assembly process. Depending on the size and style kit you order, assembly with 2-3 healthy adults typically takes 4-8 hours – more for larger kits, timber frame pergola kits, or our pergola kits with roofing. If you’re not a DIYer, many homeowners choose to have their pergola installed by a contractor, landscaper, or handyman. We have a directory of pergola installers you can use as reference to see if one of them meets your project requirements, or you can opt to contact a local handyman, handywoman, or contractor.
How to Install My Pergola On Concrete
We’ll preface this section with a suggestion for non-DIYers to contact a local contractor or landscape installer for assistance or guidance with installing your pergola posts. If you’re tackling this step yourself, the easiest method of installation is to dig footings to the correct depth (below the frost line in your area) and use post mounting hardware to attach the posts to the concrete footings or existing concrete slab. This will connect the pergola posts to the footings or slab, and hold the bottom of the post up 1″ from the concrete surface to keep the bottom of the posts out of any water that may accumulate on the patio. To determine the length below ground, we recommend at least 2 feet or more depending upon the frost line and building codes in your area. The correct depth can be determined by checking with your local building code department or online resource.
FAQs About Our Backyard Pergolas

How Do I Choose the Best Pergola Wood Type?
Our pergola kits are built using top wood choices for pergolas. Since the quality of your pergola depends on the materials and technique used to build it, buying a hand-built pergola kit made from top quality wood and hardware will make the difference in how long your pergola will last, and how it looks in your outdoor landscape. We hand-picked our wood types that align with long lasting beautiful wood pergolas. Our wood types are rough sawn western red cedar and #1 pressure treated southern yellow pine – two pergola wood types that are not sold at big box stores. The lumber we use is sustainability harvested in North America and both types are top-rated choices for outdoor living structures. Together with our time-tested design and skilled production technicians, these wood types ensure a beautiful structure that will last for many years of enjoyment.
How Do I Measure for My Pergola?
Choose the location and consider how much room you would like inside the posts and under roof, then follow these steps.
- Determine rafter length. The length of rafters (also referred to as “Depth”), will be calculated (for attached pergolas) by measuring the distance you would like to have from the wall to the outside of the posts, plus the overhang; and (for freestanding pergolas), by measuring the distance you would like to have between the outside of the posts, plus the overhang.
- Determine beam length. The length of beams (also referred to as “Width”), will be calculated by measuring your desired outside post to post width plus the overhang.
- Calculate overall size. Your overall dimensions = Rafter Length x Beam Length.
- Determine desired height above the ground. We offer posts with standard lengths of 8 feet, 10 feet and 12 feet, and can customize post lengths upon request. Decisions you’ll need to make to choose your post height include identifying how much beam clearance you want, and how you’re installing the posts (on a concrete slab or footer, or in the ground).
Can I Add a Pergola Canopy or Shade Sail?
Yes, you can add a retractable canopy to any of our freestanding or attached pergola kits in these styles: Big Kahuna, Sombrero, Melbourne, and Fedora. You can select a shade sail for any freestanding pergola kit in these styles: Big Kahuna, Sombrero, or Melbourne. Our pergola shade offerings provide coverage from the sun, and some light rain protection. Choose from high quality fabrics in a variety of colors to complete your backyard patio design.
