Summer Outdoor Gardening Checklist

Have a few things left on your outdoor gardening checklist to finish up? As you dust off the to-do list you started working on earlier this summer, or as you scan new ideas for summer patio and garden projects for your part of the country, try out one of these gardening suggestions that matches your climate and current weather patterns. Is your August hot & humid? Hot & dry? Wet & windy? Or cool & crisp? This list on Rodale’s offers gardening tips suited for many different planting zones, including the USDA plant hardiness zones 3-10.
For example, if you’re in a hot climate in late summer and into the fall months, or if you have concerns about drought, you could dress up your patio with accents that don’t require as much watering. A helpful resource by Roger’s Gardens for that type of climate contains California-friendly tips about plants, lawns, and patios to consider in August that could also be applied to other parts of the country with similar forecasts.
If you have mature landscaping that’s withering in the heat, add a structure like a freestanding pergola to finish off your outdoor garden area to help give those thirsty plants some relief. Or you could connect a walkway and garden area with a bordering pergola like our Brim style pergola kit. If you’re in a wet or cool climate during the summer-into-fall months, you can create a cozy sitting area with outdoor friendly furniture, rugs, and a structure to enclose the space while leaving the area open for a light breeze to flow through.
If you’ve ticked off most items on your outdoor gardening checklist, maybe all that’s left is to add a few finishing touches, plan your late summer picnic menu, then sit back and enjoy!
